Who Is a Money Mule?
Who Is a Money Mule?
A money mule is a person who uses their online banking account, bank card, and/or electronic wallet to assist financial fraudsters in transferring or cashing out illegally obtained funds in exchange for payment or other compensation.
What Does a Money Mule Do?
Typically, fraudsters and criminals transfer illegally obtained funds to a money mule's bank card and/or electronic wallet. The money mule then withdraws the cash and hands it over to the fraudster or transfers the funds to other bank accounts specified by the fraudster, receiving payment or a reward for this "service."
How Can Someone Become a Money Mule?
A person may become a money mule due to a lack of awareness and the desire to earn additional income.
For example, fraudsters advertise fake job opportunities through social media, text messages, and websites. These "jobs" usually require no special skills or experience—only a bank card, online banking, or an electronic wallet. In this way, they recruit people into fraudulent schemes. Victims may include students, financially vulnerable individuals, schoolchildren, and adults who often do not realize that they have become part of a criminal operation.
What Are the Legal Consequences of Being a Money Mule?
Regardless of whether a person knowingly acts as a money mule or was deceived into doing so, the legislation of the Republic of Tajikistan provides for legal liability for such activities.
Information about a person's involvement in money mule activities is recorded in the databases of credit financial institutions.
